Saxony Florence on the Elbe River
From a fishing village, Dresden grew into a spa and a royal residence, and later became the capital of Saxony. The galleries of Zwinger and Albertinum, the Hofkirche and Frauenkirche churches, and Semper's Opera are among the most important sights of Dresden. During the 2nd World War the city was completely destroyed by a massive bombardment, but was renovated and rebuilt. In the famous Baroque palace of Zwinger and the Art Gallery you can admire the "Sixtin Madonna", the famous picture by Raphael, as well as many notable works by the Old Masters from the 14th to 17th centuries (Rubens, Rembrandt, Poussin etc.).
